The Department owns eight plantations plus a number of small plots for commercial crops of fruits and spices across the Archipelago, totalling an area of c.146 ha, which are managed to provide seeds for seedlings for both the Department and local farmers.

Within the section of Resources Management and Marketing, the main areas of activity in this section are:

Forests & Rubber Plantations

The subsection is responsible for production of wood and related resources in a sustainable manner, and for the improvement of management practices in government plantations. The section is also responsible for the protection of forest resources against damages caused by fires, insect attacks and diseases. The Department owns six forest plantations in Unguja and Pemba with the total area of 8,623 ha. There are 1,270ha of rubber plantations in the isles which are currently leased to a private company.

Commercial Crops & Fruits

The main function of the subsection is to assist the local farmers to produce high quality commercial crops such as fruits and spices for subsistence and export. The section is also responsible to promote these crops to fetch good markets that will increase the incomes of the farmers and the nation as a whole.

Nurseries & Seedlings Production

The main thrust of the section is to produce good quality seedlings at reasonable cost to satisfy planning programs in the government plantations and for private requirements. Also the section aims to work with the community to provide training and assistance to small scale seedlings producers in both rural and urban areas.
