Department of Commercial Crops Fruits & Forestry

Spice and fruits development

Although Zanzibar's agriculture is based principally on the production of cloves, the islands also produce a prodigious variety of spices, both for domestic consumption and to a limited extent for export as means for farmers to earn an income.

The products which we collectively group as 'spices' are in fact derived in a variety of different ways from a wide range of plants.

The common feature is that their distinctive flavors can be preserved in a desiccated form, making it possible to store and transport them over great distances without deterioration, so long as they are kept dry.

The Departments is joined with the Zanzibar Spices Traders to study, develop, implement and assist in good packaging and processing processes.

The major spices which are start and continue develop is cinnamon, root ginger, onion buds, cloves, saffron, sesame seeds, berry black pepper, or the fruit allspice, paprika from tropical plants and trees.
